UK Dam Removal Conference

May 18 – 19, 2023

The conference will explore the reasons behind the slow rate of barrier removal and investigate the challenges that need to be addressed to remove a structure. The event will feature speakers from across Britain and Europe who will share their knowledge and experience of weir removal, detailing the physical, social, cultural and political issues and their solutions found across a wide range of rivers in urban and rural settings. The conference will also cover the procedure and process of removal, report on the physical process, and ecological and climate resilience success stories behind recent removals. Topics to be covered include removal and community opposition, physical constraints on removal, legislative issues, historical barriers, ecological gains, successful removal, and associated benefits. This conference will feature a presentation on the programme-supported Scotton Weir removal.
