This project aims to remove an obsolete barrier in Ribeira de Perofilho, Portugal, restoring river connectivity, improving riparian habitat, and engaging the local community in ecological restoration.
Ribeira de Perofilho is a small tributary located in the Santarém region of Portugal, flowing through rural and semi-natural landscapes with significant ecological value. Despite its modest scale, this stream plays an important role in local biodiversity, supporting aquatic and riparian habitats. The barrier targeted for removal is situated in a section with strong potential for habitat regeneration and improved ecological connectivity, particularly for migratory and native freshwater species.

The existing barrier in Ribeira de Perofilho is a legacy structure with no current use, which significantly disrupts river continuity, sediment transport, and aquatic species movement. Its presence contributes to local habitat degradation and biodiversity loss. This project presents an opportunity to restore the river’s natural function, improve water quality, and reconnect habitats.
The initiative will also raise awareness among the local community and stakeholders about the importance of healthy river systems and the benefits of barrier removal.
The project aims to restore ecological connectivity in Ribeira de Perofilho by removing a disused barrier, improving riparian habitat, and engaging the local community through outreach and educational activities. Expected outcomes include:
• Full removal of the concrete barrier and clearing of associated debris;
• Restoration of unimpeded flow along the stream, opening up new habitat for native aquatic species;
• Replanting of native vegetation along the riparian corridor to stabilise the banks and promote biodiversity;
• Production of a professional awareness video documenting the entire process;
• Organisation of a local event to involve and educate the community;
• Reinforcement of the role of nature-based solutions in freshwater conservation efforts in Portugal.
