Removing a dam in the Doamnei River, Romania.
Doamnei River is one of the wildest rivers in Romania. It springs below the Moldoveanu Peak (the highest peak in Romania). Like most rivers, it is fragmented by several migration barriers with different uses, but there is also an obsolete timber dam. This timber dam represents the most upstream migration barrier on the river and blocks access for many fish to the best spawning habitats.

This project is extremely important both for the project team and for Romania, as it is the first dam removal project in the country to receive official authorisation. The project team hopes that this initiative will pave the way for, and facilitate, many more similar initiatives in the future.
This a follow-on grant from a previous pre-demolition project supported by the Open Rivers Programme.
The main objective of the project is the removal of the Pojarna Dam. Equally important is making the most of the project’s visibility and impact in order to pave the way for and promote future dam removal projects of this kind.
