Removal of the obsolete Dannemark dam to restore free-flowing conditions and improve connectivity in the Mieån River.
The project is located at Dannemark on the Mieån River in Blekinge, southern Sweden. Mieån is an important coastal river that supports brown trout and the endangered freshwater pearl mussel. The river has been fragmented by several historic dams, reducing ecological connectivity.
Dannemark is an obsolete mill dam that no longer serves its original purpose but continues to block fish migration and sediment transport.

The obsolete Dannemark mill dam is a barrier to aquatic organisms and river processes. Sportfiskarna has completed several years of preparatory work, including technical studies, stakeholder consultation and preparation of the environmental court application. Removing the dam will contribute to wider catchment restoration in the Mieån River.
The project is part of the LIFE Improve Aquatic LIFE programme and has strong support from the landowner, municipality and regional authorities.
The project aims to remove the obsolete Dannemark dam and restore a free-flowing section of the Mieån River. The removal will reconnect habitats for brown trout, improve conditions for the endangered freshwater pearl mussel, as well as restore fish passage and natural sediment transport.Monitoring will include drone documentation and electrofishing before and after the works.
The project will also provide experience and publicly available documentation that can support future dam removal projects in Sweden.
