Barrier removal in Vevcanska river on Jablanica mountain, North Macedonia

Reversing ecological damage done on Vevcanska river by an artificial, unnecessary barrier, aligning the site with national environmental standards.

Introduction

The project area is located on Jablanica mountain in North Macedonia, which represents a landscape that contributes to maintaining local hydrological processes. The Vevcanska river is a vital mountain artery on Jablanica mountain, part of a hydrological system that supports Vevcani Springs, a protected area IUCN Cat II, continuing downstream to reach the Black Drin Basin.

The river is recognised for its pristine water quality and diverse aquatic biodiversity. Due to these characteristics, the river is a key part of the local freshwater ecosystems. Despite this, on the upper section of the Vevcanska river, there is Jankov Kamen locality, an artificial pond created against the natural flow conditions of the river. Although the aim of creating this pond was to support recreational activity, the barrier affected river processes and changed the habitats of the aquatic life.

Project context and opportunity

The artificial barrier was built in 2010 for aesthetic purposes, however, it disrupts the river’s natural hydrology. This dam creates a stagnant pool that suffers from eutrophication, low oxygen levels and foul odours that threaten aquatic biodiversity and degrade water quality.

This project is a strategic opportunity to remove the unnecessary structure and close its associated pipe system, which will restore the river’s natural flow. Supported by the local municipality and community, the removal will align the site with national environmental and conservation standards.

It is a “low cost, high impact” project, representing how removing such infrastructure can revitalise high-altitude riparian ecosystems and preserve water resources for future generations.

Project aims

The primary goal of the project is to remove the obsolete Jankov Kamen dam and close its underground pipe system to return Vevcanska river to its original natural course. With removal of the small-scale dam, the project team aims to eliminate a source of ecological degradation and restore longitudinal connectivity from the river’s headwaters to its downstream reaches.

There are several expected outcomes from ecological, social and educational, economic and political perspectives. The project will ensure an uninterrupted free-flowing river, restore natural oxygen levels and eliminate risks of eutrophication, achieving “good ecological status” that will benefit species like the West Balkan trout (Salmo fluviatilis).

From a social and educational aspect, this project will replace the pond with an authentic mountain ecosystem, transforming the site into a “living laboratory” for the local community and tourists. Also, this restoration will protect the long-term tourism value of Vevchani, ensuring the region remains a destination for eco-conscious travellers and enthusiasts. With this project, the Municipality of Vevchani will be a leader in environmental stewardship, aligning local policy with the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030.
